A group of volunteers who spent several hours cleaning up Hutt Lagoon last weekend filled two wheely bins with human waste and other rubbish.

The clean-up was organised by Midwest Adventure Tours owner Cameron Williams and environmental consultant Indre Asmussen as part of a visitor management plan.

Mr Williams said it was a disgusting job but one that needed to be done at the popular tourist attraction.

He said toilet paper and human excrement were most commonly found in the 500sqm area, as well as plastic wrappers and bottles.

The group also erected a makeshift sign informing visitors of where the nearest toilets are and urging people to respect the site.

But Mr Williams said when he returned on Monday the sign had evidently been ignored by some.

“It’s been ineffective,” he said.

“People have gone to the toilet out there again. There’s fresh paper out there.”

Dr Asmussen said the group also found vehicle tracks on the lake and unauthorised trails and camp sites through the vegetation.
