Racing and Wagering WA chief racing officer Charlotte Mills appointed to head of racing role at Moonee Valley

Charlotte Mills has resigned from her position as Racing and Wagering WA’s chief racing officer to return to her home State of Victoria. After 13 years at RWWA, Mills will leave WA to start her new role as head of racing at the Moonee Valley Racing Club in August. Mills was a driving force behind WA racing’s three codes continuing to race through the pandemic and record annual increases to industry funding. She said being closer to family was crucial in her decision to return to Victoria. “It’s been a pretty emotional couple of weeks,” Mills said. “I decided it was the right time to move back and put family first. “The opportunity (at the MVRC) was too good to pass up and I’m looking forward to it. “It will be sad to leave WA, we’ve built a life here.” Mills said increasing industry confidence and executing ownership strategies were highlights of her time at RWWA. “The resurrection of confidence has been big,” Mills said. “With funding for not only stakes but also breeding schemes, the WA product is in a good position to keep growing. “The upcoming distribution news is going to be a good point to leave on. “From the ownership side of things, we’ve really built that up and seen the strategy come to life. “It’s not about an investment, it’s a unique experience.” RWWA chief executive Ian Edwards said Mills had been a major contributor to WA racing. “In more recent times, Charlotte has led the industry through incredibly uncertain times with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, working closely with the racing community to ensure we were able to continue to race,” Edwards said. “Charlotte’s passion for ensuring animal wellbeing remains at the forefront of what we do, has seen a number of initiatives introduced to elevate welfare standards, including the WA Racehorse Welfare Plan, improvement to our Greyhounds as Pets program, and the review of all greyhound racetracks by the University of Technology Sydney. “On behalf of the organisation, I would like to thank Charlotte for her commitment and dedication to both RWWA and the WA racing community. We wish her all the best as she heads back to her home state of Victoria.”
