Sam Short will be gunning for a record setting swim as the men’s 400m freestyle is next to get underway.
Tara’s surprise
Despite her backend prowess, Tara Kinder couldn’t close the gap in her breaststroke heat - finishing fourth.
But her time of 1.08.46 was just enough to qualify for the semi-finals, making that three Aussies in the 100m.
Not a broken lane this time
Sienna Toohey’s second cap came undone during her swim, resulting in a delay as the 17-year-old dived back in to grab it to the tune of crowd cheers.
Toohey too good
Young gun Sienna Toohey has made a strong start in her Commonwealth Games debut swim.
She led comfortably at the turn by half a body length despite a slow start.
Crossing in 1.07.30, the 17-year-old looked like a veteran in the pool.
Right on Ramsay
Olympian Ella Ramsay kicked started her Commomwealth campaign with a comfortable 1.06.88 in the first 100m breastroke heat.
Diamonds up big at the half
Over on at the Hydro area, the Diamonds are taking care of business against Tonga - leading 51-19 at the half.
Trio of butterfly finalists
Ben Armburster, Matthew Temple and Harrison Turner have all moved on to the men’s 100m butterfly finals.
Armburster dominated his heat with a 51.74 finish, leading the entire stretch and a strong turn helped him glide to the closing wall.
Temple led at the turn and widended his gap despite a strong Joshua Liendo finish to threaten in the final 10m - 51.30 edged the Aussie as the fastest qualifier.
Turner’s 52.26 rounded out to have three Aussies in the top six.
Iona Anderson out for redemption
WA dolphin Iona Anderson is gunning for redemption after her disappointing finish in yesterday’s medal race in the 200m backstroke.
Sending a message to her competition with a top time of 59.86, the only sub minute in her heat, to waltz intot the semi-finals
Fredericks’ back for more
Off the back of her bronze medal in the 200m backstroke, Hannah Fredericks eyes the top prize in the 100m backstroke.
Her 1.00.18 heat all but guarantees she will move on.
Garbin racks up early
As expected the women’s netball squad are leading Tonga at the end of the first quarter 23-12.
WA’s goal scorer Sophie Garbin leads the game with 14 goals of 88 per cent shooting efficiency.
The Diamonds are medal favourites and will look to breeze through their pool matches.
