Relationships Australia Margaret River Pro Trials turn spotlight on emerging WA talent before the big show

In 2026, the World Surf League celebrates a remarkable milestone — 50 years of the World Tour. The Western Australia Margaret River Pro is stop No.2 on the Championship Tour, running from April 16-26 at Surfers Point. Before the world’s best hit the line-up, the spotlight turns to the next generation and the State’s homegrown talent through the Relationships Australia Margaret River Pro Trials, taking place on Friday April 10. The trials are a cornerstone of the event, offering local surfers a coveted wildcard entry into the main draw of the Championship Tour. It’s a rare and powerful opportunity for surfers to go from familiar waters to sharing the stage with the world’s elite, all in front of a passionate home crowd. Surfing WA chief operations officer Matt Wilson said the event was important for WA surfers to get the opportunity to shine on the big stage. “This event truly sits at the summit of our Pathway to the Pro initiative,” Wilson said. “The trials offer an unrivalled opportunity for WA’s top surfers. From State and national champions to rising stars and seasoned Qualifying Series competitors to break through and stand shoulder to shoulder with the sport’s elite. “To compete on the international stage in your own backyard against the best surfers in the world is an amazing opportunity for our best WA talent.” In 2025, the trials delivered exactly that kind of breakthrough moment, with local standouts Jacob Willcox and Willow Hardy rising to the occasion to claim victory. Willcox beat big stars such as Joao Chianca and Italo Ferreira on his way to a huge quarterfinals finish, while Hardy made her mark by taking on one of the biggest waves and wipe-outs of the entire event, but shrugged it off and continued. “A moment still referenced today, showing the world the talent, grit and fearlessness our WA surfers posses,” Wilson said.
