The Regina Monologues: Untold drama of King Henry VIII’s six wives to take centre stage in Kalgoorlie-Boulder

The untold drama of the six women who married King Henry VIII is set to take centre stage in Kalgoorlie-Boulder as a local theatre group brings their little-known stories to life. The local production of The Regina Monologues will put a modern twist on the lives of the 16-century women — three Catherines, two Annes and a Jane — who found their lives connected through one man. Director Ainsley Nysschen said audiences could expect a rollercoaster of emotions. “We hope that what they’ll get out of it is that they’ll laugh, they’ll think, they’ll cry, possibly they’ll be confronted by a couple of the scenes,” she said. “But they’ll come out having maybe a different understanding of the women and what they possibly went through.” Nysschen said the production was an opportunity for women of history to be given the voice they might not have had in the past. “I’ve always loved history, and I’ve always loved the Tudor history, but I really like these modern plays where they’re starting to try and give women a voice because they didn’t have a voice back then,” she said. “That modern retelling is letting them have space where their stories can be told, where they’re told as people, as women who had thoughts and feelings and views and ideas and intelligence — now we’re letting that be shown.” Nysschen said the audience should be aware there was some sensitive content in the show that might be confronting for some people. Goldfields Repertory Club’s production will star Nysschen herself, Lea Latham, Sarah-Jayne Eeles, Yvette Smith, Chloe Astill and Lauren Chapman-Holle.
