Geraldton takes second women’s country week cricket title at Wonthella as both local sides play grand final

Geraldton won a historic second women’s country week cricket title on Monday night. The destination of the title was never in doubt as both Geraldton sides contested only the second women’s grand final, showing the region’s strength. The Geraldton A-team took a comprehensive 10-wicket win at Wonthella over the B-team. The result was expected. Captain Jo Walker’s A-team were unbeaten in the qualifiers and while the B-team, who deserve praise for making the final, did their best, they were simply outclassed. “I’m very pleased with how we’ve played and very proud of my team,” Walker said. “Women’s cricket in Geraldton has come a long way. “I wouldn’t agree that we had it easy or that there wasn’t always a contest, every game gave us some challenges and we were able to meet them. “Our bowlers gave us the winning edge, they were magnificent and I always had good options with bowlers who I knew would deliver. “Credit, too, for our B-team in making the final, they played some very good cricket and also showed the depth of talent we have. “I think we can still improve.” B captain Kylie Bremner won the toss and batted, but her side had no answers against a relentless and skilled attack and were bowled out for only 35. None of the B-team batters reached double figures, with Ashlyn Thompson (4-5) making early inroads, and the rest of the bowlers did their bit. There was a fleeting hope the B’s would post 50 and give their bowlers something to defend when Tia Hatch and Bremner joined forces. They went after the bowling as best they could, but found it hard to beat the field, and inevitably perished. Geraldton A had few problems overhauling the modest target in only nine overs, with Meg Spalding (18 not out) belting a six to win the game. Dirranie Kirby, always busy at the crease, was the perfect foil. Next year’s women’s country week will be held in Bunbury, and with other sides also improving and being away from home, the task of winning a hat-trick will be difficult. But it doesn’t seem an unlikely bet.
