Geraldton Hockey Association: Champions and contenders eager to set tone as local action returns in round one

The Geraldton Hockey Association season is set to return this weekend, with round one offering an early glimpse at how each club is shaping up for 2026. With fresh legs, new combinations and plenty of anticipation, the opening round always carries a sense of the unknown. While premiership points are on the line, it is just as much about setting standards and building momentum. In men’s A-grade, the season will get underway on Friday night with Murchison taking on Yacht Club under lights. Saturday afternoon will see Saints come up against Casuals, last year’s losing grand finalists. The final men’s A-grade clash of the round will see defending premiers Rovers begin their title defence against Australs at 5pm on Saturday. Rovers will enter the season as the team to beat, but Australs will no doubt see this as an opportunity to make an early statement. In women’s A-grade, Friday night will feature reigning premiers Cardinals taking on Australs under lights. Cardinals have set the standard in recent seasons and will be keen to continue that form, while Australs will be looking to close the gap. The late Friday fixture will see Murchison face Yacht Club, with both sides aiming to start their season with a win and build early confidence. On Saturday afternoon, Saints will take on Swans in what shapes as an important opening hit-out for both teams. With a competitive season expected, early points could prove valuable. The men’s A-reseserve competition also begins on Friday night, with Saints taking on reigning champs, Casuals, mirroring the A-grade fixture. Both clubs have strong depth and this clash will provide an early indication of that. Saturday’s fixtures will see Murchison meet Yacht Club, followed by last seasons beaten grand finalists, Rovers taking on Australs at 3.30pm. Rovers will be keen to continue their strong form from last season, while Australs will be looking to challenge early. In women’s A-reserves, the action begins on Thursday night with Vets facing Australs, while Swans take on Yacht Club at the same time. Saturday will then see defending premiers Saints begin their campaign against Murchison. Saints will be looking to carry their success from last season into 2026, while Murchison will be eager to test themselves against the reigning champions.
