Negotiation claim ‘fake news’, says Iran’s Parliament
Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf has taken to social media to claim “no negotiations have been held with the US”.
“Fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped,” he wrote.
“Iranian people demand complete and remorseful punishment of the aggressors.
“All Iranian officials stand firmly behind their supreme leader and people until this goal is achieved.”
Mr Trump has rejected the suggestions that there have been no negotiations, claiming they have been taking place since Saturday.
‘One more chance’: Trump claims world will be safer
Following his Truth Social post pushing out his 48-hour Strait of Hormuz deadlines, Mr Trump spoke in the US, saying he is assessing if a “broader agreement can be reached”.
“My whole life has been a negotiation, but with Iran, we’ve been negotiating a long time,” Mr Trump said from an event in Memphis, Tennessee.
“This time, they mean business.”
He said Iran had “one more chance” at peace, adding he and his administration “hope they take it”.
“Either way, America and the entire world will be much safer and will be a much safer planet.”
What happened to Donald Trump’s 48-hour Hormuz deadline?
US President Donald Trump said on the weekend that Iran had 48 hours to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, allowing the safe passage of all oil tankers. If they did not comply with his demand, he said he would “obliterate” Iranian power plants.
That 48-hour deadline should have ended at 10.44am (AEDT), 7.44am (AWST) on Tuesday.
However, 12 hours before the deadline had ended, the US President backed down.
“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” he said in a statement posted to Truth Social.
He said he was giving Iran five more days.
However, since his comment and backing down from his position, Iranian officials have claimed they are not negotiating with the US.
