Westminster: Van driver charged over hit and run, which left 60-year-old cyclist fighting for life

A van driver has been charged over a hit and run in Perth’s north, which left a cyclist fighting for life. Police say a white Mitsubishi panel van collided with a 60-year-old cyclist on Wanneroo Road, near the intersection of Amberley Way in Westminster about 6pm on Monday. The 43-year-old driver allegedly failed to stop and fled the scene, before returning a short time later. On Tuesday, police said the Osborne Park man had been charged with one count of being a driver who failed to stop and ensure assistance was received after an incident occasioning grievous bodily harm. The cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment. “The WA Police force continues to urge all motorists to take care on the road,” a police spokesperson said. “Drive safely and keep in mind the well-being of yourself and others.” The van driver is due to appear before Perth Magistrates Court on January 12.
