Russell Humes: Man accused of attacking dog fronts Armadale Magistrates Court

A man allegedly seen punching a small dog in the head before throwing it into a trolley has fronted court. Russell Humes, 47, made a brief appearance in Armadale Magistrates Court on Monday where he faced two charges relating to torture or wounding, one count of conduct likely to racially harass, one of disorderly behaviour and one of breaching bail. Cannington Police appealed for information on July 12 after responding to reports a small dog had been “attacked by its owner”. Police said at the time Mr Humes was seen in Cannington walking through the carpark of a shopping centre with a trolley and small dog. He is accused of kicking the dog to its head and causing it to shake in fear. Later on the same day, the 47-year-old was again allegedly seen attacking the dog at the intersection of Albany Highway and Nicholson Road. Police said information was received the dog was picked up by its head and thrown into a trolley, as well as punched to the head. Mr Humes was later arrested and the dog was taken to an emergency vet. On Monday, he appeared calm in court as his lawyer requested to enter into negotiations. Magistrate Matthew Holgate extended Mr Humes’ bail and set his next appearance for October 7.
