Greenwood stabbing: Joel Thomas Buckenara denied bail over alleged stabbing of his father

A man accused of stabbing his father in their Greenwood home on Monday has been refused bail, with the court told his 69-year-old father was lucky to be alive after the alleged attack. Joel Thomas Buckenara, 28, faced Joondalup Magistrates Court from custody on Wednesday accused of one count of causing grievous bodily harm to his dad on Monday night. The police prosecutor told the court the alleged incident happened about 11:26pm when police were called to a Greenwood home where the accused and alleged victim lived. According to prosecutors, Mr Buckenara could allegedly be heard by his half-brother getting into an argument with his biological father from another room. When the relative exited his room he could see the accused allegedly in a “dispute” holding a knife before the witness fled back into the room. According to police, the accused was allegedly found holding a knife while a machete and small knife were also found by police. The alleged victim was allegedly found by police in a pool of blood and left with lacerations to multiple parts of his body including his head, body, arms and wrist. According to prosecutors he was allegedly nearly “hacked” to death and was “lucky to be alive” thanks to the paramedic’s response. The court was told by prosecutors the man was likely having a “psychotic episode” and believed at the time the alleged victim had murdered his mother. Magistrate Evan Shackleton gave Mr Buckenara the chance to remand the case for two weeks’ time for legal advice but the accused decided to argue his case for bail on the day. During the decision whether to grant bail, the court was also told Mr Buckenara had previous convictions of drug use and weapon possession as well as history of breaking a restraining order. Mr Buckenara told the court he did not pose a risk to anyone else. Magistrate Shackleman however did not rule in his favour. He said the case presented by prosecutors was “very strong” and his previous record was “not helpful”. He said ultimately there were no conditions he could impose which would satisfy him the accused would not be a risk given the “sheer violence” of the alleged case. While bail was opposed, the court was told Mr Buckenara and his lawyer would be able to make another case for bail on January 29, when he will next face court. 1800 RESPECT
