The Albany Soapbox Club is rolling into another thrilling year, with a packed calendar of events set in one of the most iconic racing locations in the region.

The season officially kicked off with registration day on February 8, and the club welcomed two new families with three new members.

The club prides itself on being inclusive, encouraging participants of all abilities, ages and all genders to get involved.

The Albany Soapbox Club had its start 64 years ago when the first West Australian soapbox club championships were held in Albany as an added event to entertain the crowds that flocked to Albany over the Easter long weekend, where it proved so popular that a club was formed soon after and races were run on a regular basis.

The club now hosts the Australian National Soapbox Championships every Easter, with Perth Soapbox Club coming down to join for the day to make for an exciting competition and hosting 55 to 60 soapboxes.

In the past, Esperance were also involved but unfortunately have recently had to fold as a club.

Soapbox racing is for boys and girls aged six to 17.

The club teaches participants how to be in control of a moving vehicle at a speed which can be up to 80km/h.

The kids learn valuable hand-eye co-ordination, depth perception and many other lessons on their way to getting their driver’s licences.

A major highlight of the season will be the 64th Albany Soapbox Club Championship, scheduled to take place on Easter Saturday.

This prestigious event will see Albany racers go head-to-head with long-time rivals, the Perth Soapbox Club, in what is always a fiercely competitive and crowd-pleasing showdown.

With decades of history behind it, the championship remains a proud tradition for the club and a must-see event on the local sporting calendar.

All events are hosted at Albany’s iconic Avenue of Honour, a venue that provides a stunning and meaningful backdrop for racing.

The combination of speed, skill and community spirit makes soapbox racing at this historic location a unique experience.

Looking further ahead, Albany racers will also travel to Perth for the Perth Championship long weekend in October, continuing the strong connection and friendly rivalry between the two clubs.

The Albany Soapbox Club invites the community to come along, get involved, and support a sport that blends tradition, excitement and inclusivity.

For anyone looking for something different this year, now is the time to jump on board.

The next meet is Sunday, February 22 at 9am.
