Barry Humphries — the comedic mastermind behind Dame Edna Everage — has been rushed to a Sydney hospital following complications following a recent surgery.

The Australian comedian, 89, was recently discharged following hip surgery, but due to a decline in health, was re-admitted.

Entertainment journalist Peter Ford told Sunrise that the performer had “a fighting spirit that he won’t give up easily”.

“Australia loves you and we will always be grateful for everything you have given us,” he said.

Humphries portrayed Edna since 1955 and created the character at age 21.

After a fall at his home caused the hip injury, Humphries said he was in “agony”.

The comedian later went on to describe himself as “Bionic Bazza” after gaining his titanium hip.
