‘Breaking point’: Live sheep export ban ‘double whammy’ for WA producers grappling with dry season

The plan to ban the live sheep export trade will push WA farmers to “breaking point” mental health advocates have warned — labelling it a “double whammy” alongside ongoing drought woes. The Regional Men’s Health Initiative executive office Owen Catto has sounded the alarm after the 2028 phase out plan was revealed by Agricultural Minister Murray Watt, with reports it could force producers to kill sheep en masse. As part of the $107 million transition fund, Mr Watt has promised a portion will be allocated to mental health support for those impacted. Asked how much would go directly to the issue, Mr Watt’s office said farmers would have to wait until “the middle of the year” for further details. “If there’s anyone having to shoot livestock, that is naturally going to cause a lot of stress and impact health and wellbeing. “It can be a really distressing scenario. This just adds stress on top of what is already a tough season. It’s just another layer that people don’t need.” Blue Tree Project chief executive Kendall Whyte said the issue was just the latest flashpoint for WA farmers, including gruelling market conditions and one of the driest summers on record. “Regardless of one’s stance on live exports, most can agree that this is adding to the current stressors farmers are experiencing,” Ms Whyte said. “They are the backbone of our country and now they’re navigating this along with hostile climate conditions, succession planning and increases in cost of production. “And we are expecting them to do this whilst trying to stay mentally healthy — a near impossible challenge.” The State Government hasn’t committed any additional funding to the transition. A Cook Government spokeswoman said the State had funded mental health support for farmer in response to the dry season in the 2024-25 State Budget. The dry season response includes $250,000 for the Blue Tree Project, $250,000 for the Grower Group Alliance, $175,000 to Regional Men’s Health and a new dedicated website for farmers to find available support. “We know that this decision will impact rural communities. We do not support the live export ban and this package does not meet the needs of WA’s hard working farmers,” she said. “Services like the Regional Men’s Health Initiative, the Blue Tree Project and the Grower Group Alliance provide important mental health and community wellbeing support for those doing it tough. “These programs recently received a funding boost as part of the Cook Government’s dry season response.” Deputy Liberal leader Steve Martin on Sunday labelled the transition fund as a “very small compensation package” and an allocation for mental health a clear indication Mr Watt knew the mental toll the decision would cause. “He knows what he’s doing to those farming families.
