Chocolate may help you shed weight — and it could boost your brain and protect it from age-related cognitive decline.

Scientists say the chemical theobromine, from cocoa beans, has many health benefits and anti-inflammatory properties that could even be used to treat Alzheimer’s.

Theobromine was found to contribute to weight management by enhancing the body’s ability to break down fats.

The study by Zhengzhou University in eastern China found it also has protective effects on the kidneys, potentially preventing formation of kidney stones.

After scoffing some chocolate, theobromine quickly spreads through the body.

It can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, potentially boosting mood and enhancing cognitive function. The study, in the Journal of Functional Foods, suggests it could be used to treat stroke, depression and Alzheimer’s.
