West Coast coach Andrew McQualter says he’s disappointed star defender Reuben Ginbey was pelted with a lemon after the club’s win over Essendon and suggested it could be investigated.

Ginbey looked shocked by the act as he revealed someone had hit him with the fruit while walking over to 7NEWS reporter Ryan Daniels for a post-game chat.

The key defender has become one of the stars for the Eagles, constantly playing undersized in defence and doing a remarkable job on the opposition’s best forward each week.

McQualter said while he was sure it didn’t worry the 21-year-old, the club would look to do everything possible to protect their young on-field leader.

“It was a bit strange,” he told 7NEWS on Monday night.

“I’m sure the AFL integrity unit and Optus Stadium will look into it. We’ve got to ensure we protect our players as much as possible.

“I’m sure it wouldn’t affect Reuben, but we don’t want to see that.”

Ginbey was the best player on the field on Sunday night, stopping talented Essendon forward Josh Caddy in his tracks for most of the night.

Caddy ended the game with two majors, but his first came with the Eagles defender taking a breather on the bench.

West Coast are also hopeful Ginbey will sign a new contract this month to tie him to the club for at least the next five seasons.

“Hopefully (he signs his new deal soon). He’s such a terrific contributor, and I love the way he goes about his football,” McQualter said.

“He’s a leader of our club.”
