West Coast coach Adam Simpson has spoken of his pride in his players after they overcame a savage injury list and an incredibly depleted backline to thrash Fremantle by 59 points and extend their derby streak to 11 wins.

But he has warned they can’t be happy with the 20.12 (132) to 11.7 (73) performance and must repeat that effort against Hawthorn this week.

The Eagles were desperate to fight back from a 97-point loss to Geelong and entered the game without Jeremy McGovern, Tom Barrass and Shannon Hurn in defence.

West Coast moved Oscar Allen to defence and started second gamer Harry Edwards playing on Matt Taberner, but the midfield stood up as Tim Kelly, Andrew Gaff and Dom Sheed led the way.

Kelly was the unanimous choice as best on ground for the Glendinning-Allan Medal after gathering 42 disposals, 13 clearances and laying nine tackles.

Simpson said his players responded to his challenge.

“I’m really proud of our players,” Simpson said.

“I do think both teams had some injury issues. Up to half-time it felt like it was going to be 170 to 160 sort of scoreboard so whoever got it into their forward line scored.

“We worked pretty hard to reduce that in the second half. I thought our mids stood up, in particular in the third quarter and allowed us the field position we were looking for. Our forwards finished off the good work.

“We played to win. That was the message before the game - lets just have a swing. We backed in our players. Our challenge is to be consistent every week.

“I think a lot of clubs are finding that difficult and we’re not different. So, I’m really proud of the players today. I’m really proud of their performance.

“But the challenge will be can we consistently do that home and away. It starts next week against Hawthorn.”

West Coast will still be without Hurn (calf), Barrass (shoulder) and McGovern (groin) for the clash with the Hawks.

“Hurn is set to be sidelined for another fortnight after re-injuring his calf in the last minute of the final session of the week and Barrass needs to re-build the strength in his injured shoulder.

“I’m not quite sure if we’ll get too many soldiers back next week. We’ll see how we go,” he said.

“(Barrass) trained yesterday. It’s a shoulder issue. It’s around the muscle/tendon area so it’s not the end of the world but he needs to have strength in that to play.”
