Dominic Thiem's long wait for a win goes on after the Austrian former world No.3 was knocked out in the opening round of the Geneva Open by Marco Cecchinato.

Australian John Millman was also dispatched on Monday, beaten 6-3 6-1 in 80 minutes by Richard Gasquet. He misses out on a second round meeting with Daniil Medvedev.

Thiem, who lost 6-3 6-4, has now gone more than a year without a win, losing all six matches this season after coming back in March from surgery on his wrist.

The 2020 US Open champion overcame Cecchinato at Roland Garros four years ago to reach his first major final, but there were clear signs of rust from the 28-year-old as the Italian triumphed in one hour and 33 minutes.

Cecchinato, who saved all seven break points against him, meets Poland's Kamil Majchrzak next.
