Madeleine McCann’s younger brother Sean McCann has been selected to swim for Scotland at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month.

McCann, who is 21, will swim freestyle amid hopes he will qualify to compete for Great Britain at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, according to The Sun.

McCann was just two years old when his older sister Madeleine disappeared from a holiday apartment while her family was travelling in Portugal in May 2007.

The high-profile case revealed parents Kate and Gerry McCann had left their children asleep in their apartment while they went for dinner at a nearby restaurant on May 3, when Madeleine disappeared at about 10pm.

Madeleine — who was just three years old when she went missing — has not been found after a world-wide, years-long manhunt.

Madeleine’s parents were initially pronounced suspects by Portuguese authorities which was later revoked, and German authorities have since announced Christian Brückner as a prime suspect, although no charges have yet been laid.

She has since been presumed dead by German authorities.

Younger brother Sean has previously competed for Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, competing in the 400m and 1500m freestyle events.

Sean discovered a passion for swimming when he was eight years old — revealed in a years-old statement to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust.

“At the age of ten, I was selected to swim at City of Leicester and I have since gone on to win multiple county titles as well as becoming regional and National champion in my age group,” he said.

Sean is also an open water swimmer, competing in the National Open Water Development Squad, as well as qualifying for the 2025 European Open Water Championships.
