The opening day of the CBH Group colts country football championships produced a massive upset, with the Northern Suns defeating the SWFL 7.1 (43) to 5.4 (34).

Played at Lane Group Stadium on Thursday morning, the SWFL entered the clash as warm favourites — however from the opening bounce, the Suns made it clear they were intent on playing like their lives depended on it.

The Suns were hard at the ball, played direct and capitalised on a handy breeze favouring the Mandurah Forum Shopping Centre end of the ground.

Trailing by 24 points at the 15-minute mark of the first half, the SWFL fought back to get within four points during the early stages of the second stanza.

Unfortunately for SWFL coach Brett Maguire, some loose checking in defence shortly after resulted in a goal against the run of play to Kane O’Driscoll, which extinguished their momentum.

The SWFL will play the Great Southern Storm in their second round-robin match at 3.30pm on Thursday.
