There was only one goal but several contentious decisions, including a goal that never was for Roma as Juventus won 1-0 at home in Serie A.

Moise Kean put the hosts ahead on 16 minutes, somewhat fortuitously.

Rodrigo Bentancur's header from a Mattia De Sciglio cross ricocheted off Kean's head and into the back of the net.

Jose Mourinho's Roma were left furious when Tammy Abraham put the ball in the net but the effort but was ruled out because referee Daniele Orsato had already whistled for a penalty - rather than allow advantage.

Jordan Veretout took the 44th-minute spot-kick and his weak effort was saved by Szczesny - the first unsuccessful penalty of the French midfielder's spell at Roma on his 14th attempt.

Abraham thought he had equalised, turning a loose ball into the net after Szczesny

Shortly after the restart, Federico Bernardeschi's spectacular bicycle kick was spilled into the path of Kean by Rui Patricio, but the striker blazed the loose ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Roma protested for a penalty in the second half but VAR ruled there was no foul on Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Juventus moved up seventh with 14 points, level with Lazio and Atalanta who are above them and one point behind fourth-placed Roma.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen soared in for a towering header nine minutes from time as Napoli extended their perfect start to the season with a 1-0 win over Torino.

After Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne had his weak first-half penalty attempt saved and Giovanni Di Lorenzo had a goal wiped off by VAR for offside, Osimhen came to the rescue for the visitors.

The 22-year-old Nigeria striker finished off an assault on Torino's goal following efforts from Dries Mertens and a deflection that set up Osimhen's header.

With their eighth win in as many league starts, Napoli moved two points ahead of unbeaten AC Milan and matched their best start to a top-flight campaign - having also won their opening eight matches in 2017-18.

Josip Ilicic netted twice and Duvan Zapata became the first Colombian player to score 100 goals in Serie A as Atalanta won 4-1 at Empoli.

Sassuolo's Gianluca Scamacca scored twice against his former team in a 2-2 draw at Genoa; 10-man Udinese came back for a 1-1 draw with Bologna and Cagliari finally earned their first win of the season by beating Sampdoria 3-1.
