Coach Grant Brebner is hopeful Melbourne Victory's horror A-League season has turned a corner after securing a breakthrough win against Wellington.

After one of the most difficult weeks in the club's proud history, Victory moved off the bottom of the table by downing the Phoenix 2-0 at AAMI Park on Wednesday night.

Brebner entered the clash under siege just seven games into his managerial career.

So when Rudy Gestede scored Victory's first goal in three games, the former EPL striker led the team's other 10 players on the field straight to embrace Brebner in a huge show of support for the rookie coach.

That nice moment, and a player-led circle on the field at full-time, shows why the group remains tight, according to Brebner.

"It wasn't myself that spoke, it was the players that led that," Brebner said.

"It's been a tough few weeks for everybody at the club. There's nobody been more united than the people inside the four walls of the changing room.

"We were obviously desperate for that win but it's something we hope can carry on a bit of momentum for us.

"While it's great to get the win, we need to back it up again this weekend."

Their second win of the season came just two days after foundation shareholder and board member Richard Wilson fired a parting shot on quitting Victory, accusing the club of lacking leadership.

After finishing 10th in 2019-20 as cross-town rivals Melbourne City qualified for their first grand final, the four-time champions have again struggled to find their feet this season.

They have not been helped by an ever-expanding injury list, which shows no signs of easing.

Star midfielder Marcos Rojas as well as defenders Ryan Shotton and Dylan Ryan went down against the Nix and all three are in doubt to face Western United at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
