Fremantle forward Jye Amiss is in doubt for the rest of the season after undergoing kidney surgery following a significant injury from Saturday’s Peel-South Fremantle WAFL clash.

The Dockers said Amiss faced a “long stint on the sidelines” following the injury which comes just weeks after he made a promising two goal AFL debut against North Melbourne in round eight.

Kidney damage is considered at the more serious end of football injuries.

Richmond champion Dustin Martin missed the last five weeks of the 2021 home and away season with a lacerated kidney and did not fully recover until well after AFL finals had finished last season.

Fremantle’s executive manager of football Peter Bell said the injury was a serious impact injury when he gave the club’s weekly injury update on Tuesday afternoon.

“Jye sustained a pretty heavy impact injury to his kidney in the game against South Fremantle,” Bell said on the club website.

”He had to go to hospital. He has had some surgery on the kidney.

“He is doing well at the moment and we are just getting all of the opinions on what it means for his football but he will be out for a period of time.”

Amiss had been warming to his work at both WAFL and AFL level after a start to the season delayed by injury and the Dockers were expecting him to earn more chances at AFL level in the back half of the season.

Meanwhile, club captain, champion and dual Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe has been set for “either or both” Fremantle’s back-to-back home games against Brisbane and Hawthorn as his return from shoulder and back surgery grows closer.

“We are hoping to get Nat back in the next week or two,” Bell said.

”He has been training really well and we are looking forward to building his football.””

The timeline means Fyfe will not be considered for this weekend’s clash with ladder leader Melbourne - a game that has taken on heightened importance after back to back unexpected losses against Gold Coast and Collingwood but Bell said: “He might be available as soon as next week (the Brisbane game).”

Despite the Amiss setback the Dockers still have a short injury list and have set a guide for Joel Western’s return from a significant hamstring injury in the next three to four weeks. Nathan O’Driscoll is the only other name on the injury list and is facing an extended time on the sidelines after a hotspot was detected in his foot.
