Greater Western Sydney midfielder Tom Green says Giants motivated by chance to derail Freo’s top-four hopes

They’ve got nothing to play for in 2022, but Greater Western Sydney are determined to “cause havoc” and put a dent in Fremantle’s top-four hopes.

The Dockers must defeat the Giants in Canberra on Saturday to remain in the hunt for a double chance and then hope either Collingwood or Sydney lose on Sunday.

At the other end of the table, GWS are resigned to a bottom four finish with a 6-15 record.

But midfielder Tom Green said the lure of derailing Fremantle’s top-four charge had given the Giants extra incentive to line up for one last swing in their final match of the season.

“No doubt at all,” Green said.

“If we can cause any havoc to some teams that are looking to set themselves up for a big September, that’s a big motivator.”

Fremantle have been bolstered by the return of captain Nat Fyfe from a hamstring injury.

While Fyfe is expected to play almost exclusively up forward in the absence of Rory Lobb (shoulder), Matt Taberner (calf) and potentially Griffin Logue (groin), Green is holding out hope he can cross paths with the two-time Brownlow medallist in the midfield.

“In my career yet I haven’t actually played (against) Nat Fyfe. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.

“We know what a champion he is. He’s a two-time Brownlow medallist and has been a star for the best part of a decade now. As a young player, I’m really excited to go head to head with someone of that calibre.

“He’s had to battle some injuries this year but all champions seem to find a way. We’re not expecting any lesser version of Nat Fyfe.

“As a midfield, we’re looking forward to tackling them head-on. Any time you get to play against good players, it’s a challenge you get to set yourself for. It should be a good battle.”

Green also backed key forward Jesse Hogan to haunt his former side, a new two-year deal the reward for his best campaign since 2018.

“He’s been massive all year. He’s a gun and he’s been in great form,” he said.

“His hands are like buckets at the moment and he’s kicking goals to. He should no doubt be confident heading into the game and no doubt continue that good form.”
