WA’s new Sheffield Shield captain Aaron Hardie is set to take his place for his side’s first game of the new red-ball season after overcoming a knee injury, while Jhye Richardson is in line to feature only days after returning from an Australia A tour of India.

The pair have both been named in a 13-player squad for a clash with Queensland, which begins on Thursday at the WACA Ground.

Hardie was initially slated to be on tour in the subcontinent with the national development side, but was withdrawn after the emergence of a minor knee issue last month.

He featured in WA Premier Cricket for Willetton on Saturday and is expected to line up against the Bulls as a specialist batsman, completing a batting unit including Cam Bancroft, Hilton Cartwright, Sam Fanning, Jayden Goodwin and wicketkeeper Joel Curtis.

Veterans Ashton Turner and Sam Whiteman have both been overlooked for places in the squad. Turner had been earmarked for a role in the shield side after an impressive pre-season, while Whiteman has only returned to Perth in recent days after spending the English summer playing in the County Championship with Yorkshire.

Richardson made his way back from India late last week after playing the second of two four-day games between Australia A and India A.

With Australia’s chairman of selectors George Bailey having publicly declared the panel wanted to see the injury-prone quick back up between games with greater consistency, he is in line to lead a fast bowling attack which will be made up by potential WA debutant Kieran Elliott, Joel Paris, Brody Couch Albert Esterhuysen and Liam Haskett.

Star off-spinner Corey Rocchicicoli, who enhanced his credentials for a national call-up by collecting eight wickets across the two Australia A games, has also been included in the squad.
