Cam Green: WA all-rounder not released by Cricket Australia for Sheffield Shield game against Queensland

Cam Green will not feature for WA in the penultimate game of their disappointing Sheffield Shield campaign, but his Australia teammates Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly will both play for their State against Queensland. Rather than line up in the shield — as he did in three games before the Ashes earlier in the season — the all-rounder will rest towards the back end of a busy season which has included five Tests against England and the T20 World Cup, where his side were shockingly knocked out in the group stages. As a nationally contracted player, the all-rounder’s availability for domestic cricket is dictated by Cricket Australia and he has not been released for a red-ball game which begins on Thursday at Allan Border Field. Green is expected to come into WA’s side for their final contest of the shield season against New South Wales in Sydney from March 14 before he heads to the subcontinent to take up a $4.15 million Indian Premier League deal with Kolkata Knight Riders. The hugely-talented 26-year-old has endured a tough summer with the bat, contributing 171 runs at an average of 24.42 in the Ashes and managing only 24 across three innings in the short-form World Cup. Inglis, who is managing an ongoing back issue and has also been largely below his best with the bat this summer, will be in WA’s side to take on the Bulls but will not play against NSW. Meanwhile, Connolly is expected to feature in both shield games before taking on his first IPL campaign with Punjab Kings, where he will be coached by the legendary Ricky Ponting. The rising star is in the midst of a horror run of batting form but was in better touch in the early stages of the Shield season, scoring two half-centuries across three games. Having won only one of their eight shield games this season, WA stand no chance of featuring in the competition’s final and would likely need to beat both the Bulls and NSW to avoid a last-placed finish for the second season running.
