Collingwood are counting the cost of their loss to West Coast at Optus Stadium tonight with a pair of stars sidelined for at least one match and another in doubt.

Gun midfielder Jordan de Goey (concussion/broken nose) and intercept-marking defender Jeremy Howe (hamstring) will miss the Magpies’ Anzac Day clash against Essendon at the MCG.

Both de Goey and Howe were done for the night before half-time with medical substitute Brayden Sier coming on and the Pies one down on the bench for nearly three quarters.

The AFL’s new concussion protocols mean de Goey isn’t allowed to play for 12 days after an accidental hip to the face from West Coast on-baller Tim Kelly, but Buckley is confident he won’t miss too much longer.

“I’m not sure if it was delayed concussion, but the doctor assessed him when he had the opportunity to and deemed that he was no good to continue,” Buckley said.

“More than likely he misses another week, I don’t think he’ll miss any more than that with his nose, but he won’t be able to play next week given the rules, and then he’ll be looking to Round 7.”

Howe appears set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines after a nasty right hamstring injury in a marking contest early in the second term.

The luckless 30-year-old, who missed all bar four matches last season with a serious knee injury, was helped off the ground by a pair of trainers and went straight into the rooms.

“Hamstrings aren’t great at the best of times but we’ll have to have a look at scans and see how that settles,” Buckley said.

Key forward Brody Mihocek also finished the game on the sidelines with ice on his shoulder.

“It was a bit of an AC (joint) stinger,” Buckley said.

“How bad is it? We’ll let that settle (and find out).”

Buckley will persist with the Darcy Moore forward-line experiment for the time being after the All-Australian defender’s three-goal performance.

Moore went back as a spare man in defence late in the first half to help stem the tide of Eagles scoring but spent the rest of the game in attack.

The Magpies’ defence struggled to contain twin towers Oscar Allen and Jack Darling who booted five majors apiece.

“It was robbing Peter to pay Paul in some ways but it’s not a one-week thing, we need to get a little bit more evidence to see if that’s something sustainable going forward,” Buckley said.

Collingwood are languishing in 14th spot on the ladder after their third consecutive loss, taking their season ledger to 1-4.
