Motorists are being urged to prepare for widespread road closures across the Perth CBD and western suburbs this weekend as thousands of runners descend on the city for the return of WA’s iconic Chevron City to Surf.

The annual event will take place on Sunday, August 30, with tens of thousands of participants tackling either the 4km course — which begins in Floreat — or the 12km, which begins at the intersection of St Georges Terrace and William Street.

Established in 1975, the City to Surf is WA’s longest-running community fun run that raises money to support thousands of Australians living with disability through genU.

CITY TO SURF ROAD CLOSURES

1AM CLOSURES

There will be road closures in the cities of Perth and Subiaco and the Town of Cambridge, with some roads closed for up to 10 hours.

Some closures will begin as early as 1am on Sunday, including St Georges Terrace between Milligan Street and Barrack Street, William Street between Murray Street and The Esplanade, Mill Street between St Georges Terrace and The Esplanade, Howard Street and Sherwood Court.

These roads will be closed in both directions and are expected to reopen around noon.

4AM CLOSURES

Oceanic Drive between West Coast Highway and Challenger Parade and Fred Burton Way will be completely closed from 4am to 2pm.

6AM CLOSURES

The West Coast Highway corridor — between Oceanic Drive and Challenger Parade — will start to shut down from 6am to 1pm, as well as Bold Park Drive and sections of The Boulevard and Oceanic Drive.

6.30AM CLOSURES

Major access corridors connecting West Perth and Kings Park, including Malcolm Street and Kings Park Road, will also be closed in both directions between 6.30am and 10.30am.

Malcolm Street and Kings Park Road will also be closed in both directions from 6.30am to 10.30am and Hay Street from Thomas Street through to Underwood Avenue and Underwood Avenue itself will remain closed until noon.

7.30AM CLOSURES

Western suburbs roads will not be immune to the road closures, with key north-south and east-west transit routes blocked later in the morning. Thomas Street between Hamersley and Murray will shut down between 7.30am to noon.

PARKING UNAVAILABLE

Alongside road closures, a significant chunk of parking throughout the area will be unavailable from 8am Saturday, August 29, to 4pm Sunday, August 30.

No stopping will be permitted along Challenger Parade.

FINISH LINE CARNIVAL

The finish line will come alive at City Beach Oval with the finish line carnival, supported by the Town of Cambridge.

The family-friendly carnival will run from 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday, is open to the public and will include free carnival rides, live entertainment, free fruit and refreshments for participants, as well as a collection point for finish-line medals and event merchandise.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the weather is set to co-operate as well, with a forecast of a mostly sunny day with a maximum of 25 degrees and a minimum of 10.

For people who are unable to attend the event in person, the City to Surf Virtual Event can be completed at any time between August 25 and September 6, which will enable people to take part at their own pace and location.

Participants can collect their event bibs and shirts at Hackett Hall at WA Museum Boola Bardip on Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29, between 8am and 6pm.

Bib and shirt collection will not be available on event day.

The event has so far raised $179,000 with a goal of $500,000.
