Carlton Blues forward Zac Fisher becomes latest West Australian to commit to Victorian club with new deal

Perth product Zac Fisher has become the latest West Australian talent to resist the lure of home, signing a new deal which ties him to Carlton for two seasons on top of his current deal. It dashes hopes he may have chosen to return to Fremantle or West Coast, with the two-year extension signed with a year still to run on his contract. Fisher follows Tim English in committing to Victorian clubs, with the towering Western Bulldogs ruckman rejecting overtures from the WA clubs to stay at the Dogs until the end of 2024. The 24-year-old has played every game this year in a career-best season as the resurgent Blues remain in contention for a top-four spot. The club announced the signing by playing on his nickname ‘Fish’ in a Finding Nemo-inspired video. A move to the forward-line late last year secured his spot in Carlton’s best 22, where he had previously battled for regular games as a fringe midfielder. Fisher played 10 league games at Perth, who recruited him from York, before being drafted with the 27th pick of the 2016 draft. He has played 88 games across six seasons at the club, kicking 44 goals. West Coast are hoping versatile Richmond premiership player Liam Baker elects to return home at the end of this season, while both the Eagles and the Dockers are believed to be in the mix for Melbourne forward-ruck Luke Jackson, who looms as the highest-profile player potentially on the move at season’s end. Carlton’s head of list management Nick Austin said Fisher was a “popular character” who “puts in the work behind the scenes”. “Zac brings some strengths to our side that are really unique, which gives us a point of difference and his versatility and willingness to play whatever role the team needs him to is valued highly internally,” he said. “To sign an extension with still a year to run on his contract tells you everything you need to know about his commitment to the Carlton Football Club and we are excited to see him continue to grow his game over the next three years.” Fisher will be 27 years old the next time he is out of contract.
