West Coast have put a timeframe on star defender Reuben Ginbey’s potential return from a quad injury — but it has left him in a race against time to feature again this season.
After being listed as TBC in the days after going down against Port Adelaide before the bye, the Eagles had Ginbey’s estimated return set at eight weeks in their updated injury list on Tuesday.
But with only nine games remaining in their season — unless they rocket up the ladder and secure a wildcard spot — even a minor setback may cruel the 21-year-old’s chances of being seen in blue and gold again this season.
“Reuben, as you would expect, has already jumped into his reconditioning program,” West Coast’s high-performance manager Phil Merriman said.
Meanwhile, No.1 pick Willem Duursma, star defender Tom McCarthy and rugged midfielder-forward Jack Graham have all been listed as ‘tests’ for West Coast’s clash with Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.
Duursma (calf) and McCarthy (hamstring) were sidelined for the Eagles’ one-point loss to North Melbourne before their mid-season bye by minor niggles, while a shoulder injury has cost Graham much of his season so far.
“Jack was very close to playing in the game against North Melbourne,” Merriman said.
“He has been full training over the last two weeks and if he gets through training this week, he will be available to play.
“Willem was in during the bye to make sure he did everything he could to get ready for Carlton.
“He has trained fully over the last week, and as long as he gets through training on Thursday then he will be available.
“Similar to Willem, Tom was in during his break.
“Tom trained fully on Saturday and has produced good speed. Once he completes Thursday, he will be available.”
Alongside utility Jack Hutchinson (hamstring) and small forward Matt Owies (concussion), winger Hamish Davis has also been listed as a ‘test’ for the clash with the Blues, having been concussed in a tackle from Kangaroos forward Paul Curtis earlier this month.
“Hamish is moving through the protocols as expected, and we have been monitoring his symptoms closely,” Merriman said.
Tall forward Archer Reid remains without a timeframe to return due to what Merriman called “persistent soreness” in his knee.
Key defender Harry Edwards looked to train fully on Tuesday but also does not yet have a set timeline as he awaits a date with the AFL’s concussion panel, having suffered three head knocks earlier in the season.
