WA’s Taj Woewodin wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and has nominated premier’s Melbourne as his club of choice ahead of next month’s AFL Draft.

Woewodin, the son of 2000 Brownlow Medal winner Shane, has declared he wants to be a father-son draft pick for the Demons in November’s draft.

It means Melbourne will be able to match any bids for the East Fremantle product or be snapped up with the Demons last pick if no other clubs bid on the 18-year-old.

Woewodin blitzed WA’s draft combine earlier this month, topping the 20m sprint with a blistering time of 2.89 seconds as his “nervous” dad steered clear of the event.

“He gets just as nervous as I do. He just gave me the usual advice to work hard and put my best foot forward,” he said.

While admitting there had been interest from other clubs, Woewodin said it would be a “dream” to end up at Melbourne — the club he’s always supported.

Woewodin’s father Shane played 138 games for Melbourne and a further 62 games for Collingwood in his nine-year AFL career.

Woewodin, who says he’s modelled his game on Cat Mitch Duncan and Pie Steele Sidebottom, is one of a number of father-son draft prospects in 2021.

Nick Daicos (son of Peter, Collingwood) and Sam Darcy (son of Luke, Western Bulldogs) are expected to go early on draft day.

Jase Burgoyne (son of Peter, Port Adelaide) and Jackson Archer (son of Glenn, North Melbourne) also nominated under the father-son rules.
