Fremantle have turned to hard-running Victorian wingman Karl Worner for their rookie draft selection, while WAFL gun Bailey Rogers failed to attract an AFL suitor.

The Dockers secured Worner as their sole non-WA pick across the national and rookie drafts. The 19-year-old from Oakleigh Chargers gets his chance after being overlooked in last year’s draft, with the Dockers pouncing on the 188cm prospect with Pick 8.

Fremantle football manager Peter Bell said the club was “really pleased” to add Worner, despite the challenge of an uncertain arrival date due to WA’s border arrangement with Victoria.

“He hasn’t played a lot of footy like the other Victorians for a couple of years, but he’s close to 190cm, runs a very good 2km time at just a tick over six minutes and is desperate for an opportunity,” he said.

Geraldton and East Fremantle product Judd McVee was the sole West Aussie taken in the rookie draft, with the half-back headed to Melbourne at Pick 18.

Once rated a top-10 draft prospect when he won WA’s under-16s MVP award, McVee has great foot skills and composure across half-back.

McVee became the third West Aussie to head to Melbourne this draft period, alongside Jacob van Rooyen and Taj Woewodin.

Rogers couldn’t emulate the mature-age success story of West Coast-bound Greg Clark, failing to find a home despite starring in the WAFL en route to a Sandover Medal win.

Kade Dittmar, Josh Cripps, Josh Browne and Bryce Watson were other WA players considered draft chances who weren’t picked up.

As expected, the Dockers re-rookied Connor Blakely and Mitch Crowden, while West Coast opted to pass on their Pick 10.
