NZ PM sends condolences over NSW floods

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has offered her nation's sympathy to flood-stricken communities in NSW.

During her first meeting with Premier Dominic Perrottet, the pair discussed flood recovery and adaptation before formal private talks at Parliament House on Thursday.

Ms Ardern said New Zealand had experienced similar natural disasters and she had given her country's condolences to the premier over the severe weather event.

The pair said they valued that Australia and NZ could share personnel and information in times of need.

Mr Perrottet said his government was still learning as it worked through the flood recovery effort in northern NSW after February's devastating floods.

"Following the issues up north ... we commenced a review," he told Ms Ardern.

There were issues involved in dealing with an immediate disaster but also problems to be resolved after the emergency response ended, he said.

"So (we have a) response, but then also resilience going forward and looking at new ways of doing things," he said.

Mr Perrottet met with Ms Ardern after he visited flood-affected communities in Camden, southwest of Sydney.

The meeting was the first time the two leaders have met face to face.

Ms Ardern will meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday evening and take part in an Australia-NZ leadership forum.

Ms Ardern arrived in Sydney on Wednesday night after spending two days in Melbourne, where she met with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews.

Her visit has been focused on trade and tourism after the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions. She travelled to Australia with more than 30 business leaders.
