Alaska tsunami warning issued after 7.3 magnitude earthquake near Sand Point

Residents in areas across Alaska have been told to evacuate and head to higher ground after a 7.3 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami warning, and water began to recede.

The quake struck near Sand Point at 12.38pm on Wednesday, local time, according to the National Weather Service.

Since the large-scale quake, multiple aftershocks have been recorded.

Radio broadcasters were interrupted as a tsunami warning was issued.

The National Weather Service Tsunami Alerts X social media page issued a warning in the minutes after the quake.

Images have been shared online of water levels in Rasberry Island, showing a “significant drop” since the quake.

The tsunami warning now sits as a tsunami advisory, with officials telling residents to wait for the all clear from locals.
