Weather warning: Exmouth flooded, Perth battered by high winds and heavy rainfall
Exmouth’s roads were flooded and Perth and the South West were battered with high winds as wild weather hit WA last night.
The popular north west tourist town received a torrential downpour as a trough moved over the Pilbara and Gascoyne, causing inundation of the townsite.
Locals are reporting unconfirmed falls of an incredible 188mm in their rain gauges, officially however the Bureau of Meteorology’s Learmonth rain gauge recorded 28mm, while a gauge on the west coast of the Cape Range National Park recorded 69mm.
Local Bec Logan caught the peak of the flooding on video at 4am this morning as water churned over the road on the corner of Murat Road and Maidstone Crescent near the Caltex.
And there was still plenty of water around this morning, as captured in a second video she took as the sun rose.
Motorists in the area have been advised to use extreme caution on the Minilya Exmouth Road from the Burkett Road intersection to Exmouth.
Perth received 12.6mm of rain in the 24 hours to 7.30am and was blasted by wind gusts of up to 44kmh as a front passed over just after midnight.
Rottnest Island copped the worse of the high winds, recording gusts up to 89kmh, followed by Colpoys Point, near Garden Island, with 76kmh and then Bickley with 72kmh.
Jandakot recorded the highest rainfall in the metropolitan areas with 22.6mm.
Heavy rain was also recorded in Witchcliffe, 36mm, and Busselton, 23mm.
A weather warning on issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday afternoon for parts of Perth has now been cancelled.
However, a severe weather warning remains in place for the South West and lower south west districts, including Bunbury, Busselton, Manjimup, Margaret River, Dunsborough and Walpole.
Damaging winds of up to 90kmh are possible. the bureau says that while winds of this intensity are not unusual in winter, it is uncommon for them to occur from a northerly direction.
