Severe weather is threatening to lash Western Australia’s southwest with warnings for local residents to prepare for heavy rain and damaging winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a low-pressure system well to the south of the state will deepen and move northwards on Thursday.

It is expected to be just south of Albany by Friday morning bringing heavy rain and wind gusts of up to 90km/h.

Emergency WA said centres that could be impacted include Albany, Mount Barker, Augusta, Bremer Bay, Denmark, Hopetoun, Pemberton, Walpole and Windy Harbour.

Conditions are expected to ease by Friday afternoon.

It comes as a deluge of rain sweeping across Perth is causing traffic delays as motorists deal with slippery roads and poor visibility.

As parts of the State are getting drenched by a wet weather system topped with a cold front, Main Roads WA warns motorists to “drive safe” and with “caution”.

Perth is expected to get up to 45mm of rain, with the wet weather having already caused several minor accidents.

Main Roads spokeswoman Bernie Dimanlig said the wet weather was causing “a lot of breakdowns” and a “couple of crashes”.

She said many vehicles just were not “wet weather-ready”.
