Grab the sunscreen, Perth and brace yourself for yet another heat wave.

Beaches are set to be packed as the city sweats through more soaring temperatures - tipped to hit 41C on Wednesday and then linger around the 40C mark for the rest of the week and into the weekend.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Luke Huntington said the weather was not expected to cooling off until at least Sunday.

“Perth is experiencing a heat wave at the moment. We saw temperatures around Perth reaching 41C, and we are going for another 41C today,” he said.

“It will stick around that 40C mark right through to Saturday, and will become slightly cooler Sunday dropping to 37C.”

Mr Huntington said Wednesday morning would be slightly windy, but should ease off around lunchtime.

He said it was typical weather pattern for WA, and that the heat wave was created by a west coast trough sitting off the coast bringing all the hot and dry air inland.

With the wind picking up, a severe fire warning is in place for the majority of the State, and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has declared a total fire ban for Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for BOM said the temperatures across the State were “quite a few degrees” above the average temperature for this time of year.

It comes almost a week after WA recorded its hottest day on record in the Pilbara region.

Onslow, about 1400km north of Perth, sweated through a scorching 50.7C on January 13 -- matching the hottest day on record for Australia set in 1960 in outback South Australia.

The small beachside town smashed it’s previous hottest day record of 48.9C, which was set in 2008.
