Broome weather: Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tiffany brings wild winds, hail and thunderstorms to tourist haven

Broome has been battered by wild weather, triggered by ex-Tropical Cyclone Tiffany, with strong winds, thunderstorms, rain and even hail smashing the coastal town overnight.

Footage of the damage show trees uprooted, branches strewn across roads and fences felled as two storms hit the tourist haven.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Jessica Lingard said the first of the storms started south of Derby before moving through Broome about midnight.

“The two systems combined, so the wet season currently underway and the ex-Tropical Cyclone, would have enhanced the storms in Broome last night,” Ms Lingard said.

It comes as a severe weather warning is issued for parts of the Kimberley, with ex-Tropical Cyclone Tiffany triggering damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

The Bureau has forecast heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding across northern and inland areas of the Kimberley as a result, as the tropical low tracks further west.

Across the northern Kimberley, the eye of the ex-tropical cyclone, damaging wind gusts up to 100km/h and severe thunderstorms are expected.

In Broome, a brief reprieve from the wet weather is expected on Friday morning, with a mostly sunny morning forecast.

However, it will be short-lived, with the Bureau warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds later in the day and a 60 per cent chance of rain.

Temperatures in Broome are forecast to his 34C to 35C for the next week with dawn temperatures reaching a minimum of 30C.
