Leeman fatal crash: Premier open to lowering speeding limit on Indian Ocean Drive where Jordan Culley died

Premier Roger Cook is open to lowering the speed limit on an infamous stretch of road near Leeman after a beloved teen footy player was killed. Jordan Culley died at the scene south of Leeman on Indian Ocean Drive when his white Toyota LandCruiser station wagon left the road and rolled several times about 5am on Tuesday. The 17-year-old died just a day after Opposition leader and Moore MP Shane Love launched a petition to reduce the speed limit on Indian Ocean Drive through Leeman from 80km/h to 60km/h. Mr Love told The West that 140 people had died on WA roads in 2023 — including 68 on regional roads. “A speed reduction is a fast and straightforward option for the 1500 vehicles that travel this section of Indian Ocean Drive every day,” he said. “I urge the Cook Labor Government to heed the warnings of Leeman locals who experience the ‘near misses’ every day as they simply try to drive into town to grab fuel, groceries and access the shire depot or the industrial area.” Mr Cook said that he was not aware of the “specifics around Leeman and the speed zones that impact on that town” and indicated that he was open to dropping the speed limit. “Certainly, I think, lower speed limits are an important part of keeping the community safe,” he said. “I look forward to seeing the details around that petition.” Jordan’s football club Cervantes Tiger Sharks paid tribute to him on Facebook, calling him “one of its brightest young stars”. Jordan’s 18-year-old female passenger and his two male passengers — aged 16 and 20 — remain in Royal Perth Hospital in stable conditions.
