Decorated military veteran James McMahon steps down as ACE chief operating officer to spend time with family

For Australian Capital Equity’s outgoing chief operating officer James McMahon, an approaching 60th birthday has created a yearning for more time in his life. A decorated military veteran of 24 years and former WA prisons boss, Mr McMahon stood down from his role of six years at the end of June. He described his six years with ACE — the private investment company of WA entrepreneur Kerry Stokes — as a career highlight alongside leading Australia’s elite SAS regiment. “I put my time at ACE up there with leading military operations and I feel very privileged and actually honoured to have been given the opportunity,” he told The West Australian. “I very much appreciated the opportunity. I’d like to think I’ve given my best, but I I’ve also learnt an enormous amount.” The decision to move on from the organisation was a “time of life decision”, Mr McMahon said. “I don’t want to be too philosophical here but a wise person chooses their destiny a little bit,” he said. “As I approach 60 — I just want to create a bit more time. I’m going to maintain an association, do some consulting for ACE, but I’m going to create a bit more time — that’s more time with my family and more time as I move into the next phase.” Mr McMahon, who won the 2019 Western Australian of the Year award, recognised the organisation’s work contributing across multiple sectors. “The loyalty, entrepreneurship, and compassion that ACE has displayed is fantastic. There is a vibrancy there because you work at all levels and across all sectors,” he said. “As you get a little bit older in life, you realise every sector is important and it’s about every sector working together for the common good. Ultimately, that’s what we do.” Mr Stokes is also the chairman of Seven West Media, publisher of The West Australian.
