A dead whale that floated to shore off the coast south of Mandurah has been removed.

Authorities were notified to sharks feeding off the carcass about 1km off the Dawesville Cut and issued an alert on Wednesday.

Extraordinary footage of a 3m tiger shark taking bites out of the whale stunned social media users when it was posted to a local community Facebook page.

By the afternoon, the whale had washed up on Florida Beach south of the cut.

Based on its size the whale was believed to be a juvenile humpback.

Drone photographer M.E. Photography was lucky enough to capture still photos of the whale on the shore.

A City of Mandurah spokesperson said a specialist contractor wrapped and loaded the whale carcass on a truck and transported it to Dardanup Landfill for disposal.

The beach is currently still closed and will be reopened once it’s safe.

The beach is just minutes from Pyramid Beach, where 15-year-old local surfer Zac Hlaing was bitten on the foot by a shark in 2024.

Just a few kilometres north is where surfer Ben Gerring, 29, lost his life after a shark attack at Gearies Beach almost a decade ago.
