Cars travelling southbound on the Mitchell Freeway faced delays today after a caravan lost a wheel that then hit the car behind it.

The incident happened about 10am this morning just before the Hay Street exit.

The wheel bounced off the second car before disappearing over the barrier and down towards Market Street.

The caravan has been towed.

Both the driver of the car towing the caravan and the driver of the car that was hit by the wheel managed to steer their vehicles to safety without causing a major crash.

Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident and there was no damage to the caravan.

Tray tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the caravan.

Lanes were congested back past the Vincent Street exit but are now clear.
