If we’ve learnt anything about pandemics, it’s that things change, and then change again.

And, just as travel to Victoria has been off our playsheet, it will return.

When it does, there’s a visual treat in store — for the new Ovolo South Yarra is a design-fest.

Cues come from the days of disco, rock gods and retro glamour. It blends past, present and progressive. Retro chic and pop art meet. The designers set out to make Ovolo South Yarra bold, creative, and unpredictable.

And the hotel was designed with long-term collaborators of Ovolo, award-winning and Sydney-based design studio Luchetti Krelle.

A spokeswoman for Ovolo says: “All 123 rooms infuse retro-plush, with accents of chrome and colour. Ranging from micro-hotel rooms to Rockstar suites, completing the hotel in true Ovolo fashion. Each with a musical moniker, aptly named in honour of the era’s most iconic lyrical lovers, John, Yoko, ‘Sonny’ and Cher.”

Rooms have bold graphic wallpapers and chrome makes a comeback in feature joinery pieces.

There’s a water dispenser (to reduce those plastic bottles), Chromecast and Bose Bluetooth speakers (excluding Go Go rooms).

There are modern art installations and collaborations with local and international artists throughout the building. It features the works of Mr Brainwash, Punk Me Tender, Ben Tankardand and Jisbar.

The centrepiece in the lobby is a neon fireplace with a bright orange flue. The concrete reception desk weighs six tonnes.

A big internal light well gives Ovolo South Yarra its heartbeat. The largest in Australia, it was created in partnership with FPOV lighting and audio-visual designers.

Leading (and formidable) Australian designer Anna Roberts turned her eye to interior styling, adding art pieces, artefacts and curiosities.

Ovolo’s own Radio Ovolo, Music Curator Andrew Lewis, curated a score with chic-disco vibe within public spaces and a Latin feel in the restaurant and bar.

The hotel’s restaurant, Lona Misa Kitchen and Bar is spearheaded by renowned Melbourne chefs Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters, Smith & Daughters Deli) and Ian Curley (French Saloon, Kirk’s Wine Bar), in collaboration with the hotel.

Curley along with plant-based chef and author Martinez have curated vegan/plant-based menus with vegetarian options, paying homage to Martinez’s Latin roots.

The hotel is next to the intersection of Toorak Road and Chapel Street in Melbourne’s cultural precinct.
