East Kimberley’s first BMX track unveiled in Kununurra
The East Kimberley’s first BMX track is officially open.
Located near the Kununurra Rodeo Grounds on Drovers Road, the bike track’s first stage was unveiled on Sunday at the conclusion of the Sandalwood Sanctuary Kununurra Half Marathon.
It comes after four years of development, including land clearing, earth moving and ground compaction works, to create the 400m Olympic standard track.
Kimberley Action Sports Incorporated co-ordinator Glenn Taylor said it was great having the first riders on the track to test its performance.
“The track is not yet in its final shape or design; this will come after more riding and rider feedback over the next few years,” he said.
“My vision for the BMX track is a facility for the Kununurra youth, and young at heart, to access free of charge to ride from dawn to dusk, providing a fun, ‘controlled-risk’ activity.”
Development of the Kununurra BMX track was made possible by Federal Government funding, as well as several local sponsors.
Riders will be able to use the track free of charge throughout each dry season.
