SWFL men’s: HBL claim Harvey Fresh Cup with dominant win over Harvey, Donnybrook start season with win

Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault took back the Harvey Fresh Cup in dominant fashion on Saturday, smashing Harvey by 104 points at Harvey Oval.

The Lions gave Derek Hall the perfect start in his second stint coaching the club with a 21.8 (134) to 4.6 (30) victory that brings the cup back to Brunswick Oval for the first time since 2021.

New Bulls coach Kurt Haunold will have much to ponder from the result, with new recruits Jordan Strahan, Braden Fimmano, Ryan Lester-Smith and Cooper Sparks failing to lift his young side.

Spearhead Jarrod Humphries won the Nola Marino Anzac Medal with a nine-goal haul for the winners, while Blake Offer was a more-than-handy sidekick with five as big guns Connor Carbone (two goals) and Ty Anderson (one) also got on to the scoresheet against their local rivals.

Donnybrook started their season with a bang, defeating Augusta-Margaret River by 38 points at Gloucester Park.

Brandon Jetta kicked five goals for the Dons as fellow club debutants Matt Martin (two goals) and Beau Luzi (one) also scored one each, while young gun Cooper Clarke-Dehring booted three majors in a best afield display for his side, who ran out 13.10 (88) to 7.8 (50) winners.

Eaton also got their season started with a victory at Collie Recreation Ground, taking down Collie by 11 points in a low-scoring affair.

The win was soured by an injury to Travis Hodgkinson at the start of the fourth term that caused a lengthy delay as he was taken to hospital, but he has been cleared of any fractures.

A young Boomers side featuring seven club debutants — including Collie product Jackson Broadbent, playing on a permit from South Fremantle — did enough to hold off the Eagles and earn a 7.10 (52) to 6.7 (43) victory.
