Children the key to real change Lanai Scarr, Federal Political Editor Six years ago my world changed forever. Over the course of three minutes I went from a mum-of-one to a mum-of-four. I had two identical boys born two minutes apart and a fraternal girl born a minute later. Their-then 21-month-old older sister suddenly had a collection of playmates to choose from (or as is the case lately, argue with). I’ve always felt passionate about gender equality. As someone who started her career at the age of 19 and being a young (relatively, I’m 34 this month), successful Federal political editor working in the epicentre of patriarchal toxicity that is Parliament House for close to 12 years — I’m acutely aware of the important position I hold in breaking down barriers and role modelling. I run an all-female bureau and am a fierce advocate for women not being pigeonholed by society’s standards. Yes, you CAN be a Federal Political Editor with four kids under the age of eight! But in reflecting on this year’s International Women’s Day theme of “breaking the bias” I came back to my kids. Specifically, my triplets. My youngest daughter Edith will, if things remain as they are today, likely get paid $25,000 less than her brothers annually for doing the same work. She’ll be less likely to be considered for executive roles. She’ll be less likely to hold board positions. Edith will face higher rates of sexual assault and harassment both at and away from work. A total of 39 per cent of Australian women faced sexual harassment in their workplace in 2018 compared to 26 per cent of men. When it comes to sexual violence, which horrifies me to think about, the gap is even starker. A total of 23 per cent of Australian women over the age of 18 have survived sexual violence, compared with eight per cent of men. “Break the bias” becomes even more stark when you think about three children born into the world at the same time, raised the same way and yet experiencing significantly different outcomes simply because of their gender. Our children, our daughters and our sons deserve a better future. Our sons need to be raised to break the bias. Our daughters need to live in a world where they don’t even realise there is one because they have an equal seat at the table. How much longer before battle for true equality is finally won? Sarah-Jane Tasker, Business Editor When feminist protests in Australia began in the late 19th century, I’d wager a bet that those marching for equal rights then, couldn’t imagine that battle would still need to be fought today. As they raised their voices and demanded change, they likely believed that by 2022 the rights they deserved would have been met by then, and then some. But as we celebrate International Women’s Day we continue to read data that shows while we have come far, we still have a really long way to go. The gender pay gap still exists, women are underrepresented in senior executive roles and over represented as victims in workplace sexual harassment reports. Women are half the population and yet still can’t be treated equal in every sense of the word because they are regularly held back because of gender bias. This year’s theme for IWD is #BreakTheBias – an apt slogan given most women come up against a form of bias on a regular basis. It is not common to hear that men have been held back because of their gender. Bias usually refers to a belief that is closed-minded, prejudicial or unfair. We are all bias about something, it is human nature. But what if we all called out our own bias instincts and forced ourselves to question and act on that. It is up to people in position of power to raise awareness against bias, own up to their own bias, and build workplaces that allow women to thrive. CEOs and chairman are in a position to address one major equality concern –the gender pay gap. They could stop that today. And they have the power to create workplaces that empower women to succeed. I have been fortunate in my career to have male leaders who have not seen my gender, but my worth ethic and passion, and have championed my success. If that form of support was widespread, I wouldn’t need to be writing this column. I want the next generation of women to not have to march in the streets to demand equality, I want an equal world to be all they know. Because just imagine a gender equal world – the world the women who started the first marches imagined, how great would that be. Ticking a box won’t drive out workplace problems Rangi Hirini, Features Reporter There’s a notion among women of colour that not only could we, and do we, suffer from discrimination due to being a woman but we have the added effect of our heritage and culture. The goal for this year’s theme, Break the Bias, is to have a world with gender equality, free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Bias is something all women can attest to but there’s an added layer for women of colour in the bias we feel against us in our workplaces. Being pigeonholed into a position based on your ethnicity can sometimes means you’re overlooked for other positions because workplaces need to ticket their ethnicity box. Women of colour, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities face more acute biases in the workplace. Employers need to act now to support, retain and advance women. Research shows that bias contributes to all women, not just minority groups, being passed over for jobs and promotions. Almost 60 per cent of women regularly experience micro-aggressions at work. But we have to remember to act on gender equality every day, not just in March. Just like holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day, we should not be waiting for a day or an event to tell someone that we appreciate them. Women are people, we aren’t a box to tick. Breaking the Bias will lead to a more equal future not just for one woman but for all women from all different backgrounds. We all have a part to play Arylene Westlake-Jennings, Editor PerthNow Newspapers The corny Deal or No Deal crossed-arms pose aside, today’s International Women’s Day campaign theme #BreakTheBias imagines a world of gender neutrality, one free of stereotypes and discrimination. And oh boy do we need it now more than ever. According to Lean In, an international community that helps companies build inclusive workplaces where women of all identities are supported and empowered, about three-quarters of females around the world experience gender bias – or sexism, in old school terms – at work. As my Walkley award-winning colleague Caitlyn Rintoul unearthed the prevalence of sexual assault and harassment in WA’s mining industry over the past year, so too were many women reminded of unfortunately similar bouts of deliberate prejudice toward them in the workplace simply for their gender. But while many, myself included, would like to think we treat all our female colleagues as equals, the gender pay gap, the treatment of someone based on their physical appearance – aka beauty bias – and even the notion that women who do not have children are somehow unsuited to certain roles, can create the less-talked-about phenomena of unconscious bias. An example of unconscious gender bias is evidenced in the growing prevalence of blind recruiting – software is used to block out candidates’ names and other personal details to avoid hiring panels favouring male potentials over their female counterparts, thus making the decision on the most appropriate employee based on merit alone. The recently minted “bro-priating”, much like mansplaining, is another act many ladies will recognise: when a female member of a team makes a point during a meeting that no one cares about, only to have a male colleague suggest the same thing to rousing endorsement. We all have unconscious partisanship to some extent, and the way we mindfully recognise and tackle these stereotypes will take me another 1000 words at least. But learning what these biases and micro-aggressions are and calling them out – because action is needed – is undoubtedly the first positive step we all should take. Admittedly, just last week, I baulked at the news the WA branch of the Transport Workers Union had elected its first female vice-president. Why is this even news? Should it be exciting that a woman can lead what is apparently a male-dominated industry? I rather it not be something worth trumpeting over as it enforces the stigma that women should not/cannot do everything else a bloke can. But neither should I have lessened this woman’s achievements by not acknowledging what a great role she had just entered. But I still back the notion that it shouldn’t be out of the ordinary to see a female tradie wielding a trowel on a construction site, or a woman conjuring up a new pale ale at the local brewery. Perhaps I am blasé because I work under and alongside some bad-arse females – our CEO Maryna Fewster, managing editor Amanda Keenan, business editor Sarah-Jane Tasker, federal political editor Lanai Scarr, PerthNow website editor Natalie Richards, and chief of staff Hayley Sorensen, to name a few. But I still catch myself making sweeping assumptions. So this #IWD2022, I am taking responsibility for my thoughts and calling out my own gender prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping as well as any I see. Look out, people! And if we all play the part, I can look forward to the day my twins reach working age and my daughter is pitted completely objectively against her brother when they search for a job, from their first to their dream positions in their chosen careers. Here’s hoping. Mind the gap? We should be infuriated Amanda Keenan, Managing Editor Pardon me, sir. May we offer you $23,000 per year more than the lady over there? Consider it a bonus for being a bloke. Oh, and let’s just keep that between us, eh? It’s Western Australia’s grubby little secret: at 21.9 per cent we have the highest gender pay gap in the country. The national average is 14.2 per cent. There was a collective gasp as that spicy statistic was lobbed at the audience at Friday’s UN Women International Women’s Day event. Yet it was far from the only shocking reminder of how far we still have to go. Though we are fierce, women are still considered the weaker sex. Though we are one half of humankind, there remain those who seek to diminish us. Though we are equal in so many ways, we remain inferior. It’s a bias that needs to be broken from the beginning, and it’s not just about teaching young men to respect women – it’s about teaching young women to know their own worth. I’m privileged to be surrounded on these pages and in my life by powerful, audacious women, and I’m lucky to work in a place that treasures those traits – values them. But it’s not always the way. And sometimes, women can be their own worst enemies. So while we agitate to ensure society and employers properly acknowledge the worth of women, we must continue to unashamedly, unapologetically value ourselves – and each other. Parents’ role in gender free expectations Kate Phillips, Senior Digital Producer When I was two years old, I made a point of learning how to wee standing up. Why? Well, it was really more a case of why not? Boys like my brother could do it, so why couldn’t I? And I have stuck to this mantra ever since (unlike weeing standing up). As you can imagine, I have been lucky enough to have a family that supported me from a young age to challenge stereotypes and break down barriers like bias. But not everyone is that lucky. Unfortunately, gender bias starts from a very young age – and I’m not just talking about the toy aisles at K-Mart. I am talking about the very different expectations placed on kids, based purely on whether they are born a boy or a girl. Like when a girl is expected to clear the table at dinner, while the boy is expected to take out the rubbish at the end of the night. Or when a boy with strong opinions is seen as a leader, while a girl is seen as bossy. Yes, this still happens. These biases start out as expectations but morph into ‘roles’ that are replicated through every stage of life. Roles that are generally deemed harmless, until we see how they translate in places like the workforce, or romantic relationships. Like when women with the same — or superior — skill set as their male colleagues have to work twice as hard to prove they are just as good at their job or earn respect. Or when a woman takes on the mental load of family responsibilities, as well as a majority of the housework, while holding down a job and trying to maintain some form of social life. Yes, this still happens too. I’m not saying every workplace or relationship is like this, but having been a woman for 40 years and knowing many others, I can say without a doubt, it is pretty common. Gender equality has come a long way, but sadly in 2022 we still aren’t where we need to be. That is why breaking the bias is so important. It won’t change until we do. And we don’t have to wait for change to start at the highest level, we can start the movement at home. It can be as simple as re-framing the way we speak to our children, modelling unbiased behaviour in our relationships, or supporting children to challenge gender roles the moment they can. Because we can all do something to help break the bias (one stand-up wee at a time). Brutality of misogynists hits home Rhianna Mitchell, STM Editor A few weeks ago I went to a local cafe to work. I had only just taken a sip of my coffee and opened my laptop at my quiet outdoor table when the conversation two middle-aged men were having behind me stopped me in my tracks. It was two days after sexual assault survivors Grace Tame and Brittany Higgins had delivered powerful speeches at the National Press Club, once again reliving their horrific trauma in order to demand “real change in our laws, as well as in our language, in our national culture, as well as our national conversation.” This conversation taking place less than a metre away from me exposed just how far we have to go, and despite all the progress made when it comes to gender equality, until we eradicate everyday sexism the battle will never be won. Tame, one said, needed “a good slap” because of the way she “disrespected” Prime Minister Scott Morrison, referring to the now infamous exchange at the Australian of the Year morning tea in Canberra. “I’m sick of hearing about them,” said the other. “Plenty of other people have been raped, you don’t hear them going on about it.” At that point I stopped, turned around and glared at them. They briefly looked my way and continued on. I slammed my laptop shut, shook my head at them and stormed past, muttering under my breath, noticing as I left another woman sittting alone at a table on the other side of them. I felt too uncomfortable to stay, and too uncomfortable to speak to them, which I now regret. My instinct at the time was not to make a scene, or cause a fuss. To be polite. Reflecting on this encounter, I thought about how I could have handled it differently. What would I have said? Would it have made a difference to their views? I have two young daughters, what lessons do I want to teach them about finding, and using, their own voices? Perhaps what struck me the most about this experience was the casualness of the exchange; how at ease these men were making such offensive remarks. There were no hushed tones, instead they spoke in booming voices with apparently no concern about who might hear them. Yes theirs are only two views, but for anyone questioning why Tame and Higgins are so determined to “make some noise,” it’s a stark reminder of what they are up against. Bringing end to patriarchy is team effort Kate Emery, Senior Reporter Being a woman is brilliant. That’s not sarcasm. The men’s rights activists in my inbox will hardly believe it but sometimes I tire of complaining about the downsides of being a woman when there is so much to love about it. That’s not to say women shouldn’t continue to highlight the perils of the patriarchy — sexual harassment, the gender pay gap, shaving companies’ deep held belief that women only want pink razors — but it would be disingenuous to pretend there’s not plenty to enjoy about being a woman. Expressing strong emotions, like having a cry after a tough day or at a particularly emotional toilet paper commercial, is somehow more socially acceptable for me than it is for many men. I don’t have to save my tears for “acceptable” tragedies like Warnie’s death or my AFL team’s grand final loss to weep on a friend’s shoulder. My clothing options are almost limitless, so long as I don’t plan on taking a job as a flight attendant with Qantas: pants, frocks, heels, flats, suits or sundresses are all on the table. Men, unless we’re talking Harry Styles, face a choice between whether their pants and tops will have short or long arms and legs. The burden of childcare falls disproportionately on my shoulders but, with that, comes the freedom to take maternity leave and work flexibly. Anecdotally employers are much less keen to let men work flexibly or take parental leave. When I take one of my children to a doctor’s appointment or a play date absolutely nobody ever asks me where my partner is or suggests I’m “babysitting”. A life without gender bias would open all these options up to men as well. There’s no reason men shouldn’t be just as free to cry over a bad haircut, display their gams in a mini or take a year of paternity leave except that society has decided these are “womanly” things. Women suffer under the patriarchy, of course we do, but men do too. If only some of the XYs among us would wake up to that fact we could dismantle it together and all have a lot more fun.
