Tourism students take charge of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s tram to gain hands-on experience as tour guides

Tourism students have taken charge of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s tourist tram for an afternoon to gain hands-on experience as tour guides. The Eastern Goldfields College Year 12 tourism class had the opportunity to ride the historic tram to some of the city’s top tourist attractions where they played the role of tour guide. Tourism teacher Nadia Fitzpatrick said the excursion was a part of the class’ assessments for the term. “They will be presenting at one location each, pretending they’re the tourist guide, to get that sort of hands-on work experience,” she said. “They have researched their tourism spots and they have their scripts prepared. “The practical experience will help them if they want to get into the tourism industry, they’ll have a good understanding of what it’s like and what’s involved in the industry.” Ms Fitzpatrick said the afternoon was a highlight for the students who enjoyed practical learning. The tram stopped at some of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s historic and significant sites including the Museum of the Goldfields, Super Pit, Mt Charlotte and Boulder town hall. In preparation for the excursion each student had to research one of the sites to share some interesting information as though they were tour guides.
