Tent boxing love story Kid Snow brings scenes from Goldfields to the big screen

A love story set in the desert against the backdrop of the ’70s tent boxing world will bring scenes from the Goldfields to the big screen later this month. During filming of the feature-length movie Kid Snow in 2022, locals were given the chance to rub shoulders with the star-studded cast as extras. Producer Megan Wynn said Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Coolgardie locals might see their own backyard in a new light after watching the movie. “When you from this place, it tugs on heartstrings a lot, to see familiar locations projected on a big screen in such a beautiful way,” she said. “I think that the locals when they see the film will really see some of their places depicted in ways that they haven’t really imagined. “I think it will really deepen the appreciation for some locals to see this too, as to just how startling their buildings and their locations are, and how cinematic they are.” Wynn said as a period piece set in the 1970s the film would likely cast a few local minds back to take a trip down memory lane. She said Kalgoorlie-Boulder and its surrounds were chosen after extensive scouting of the WA outback, with the area’s cinematic locations and its historic connection to tent boxing making it an ideal spot. Wynn said she hoped the film put Kalgoorlie-Boulder on the map for future producers. “It’s very exciting to put this on the big screen to show other industry professionals what Kalgoorlie and the Goldfields-Esperance region has to offer,” she said. The story follows Irish tent-boxing fighter Kid Snow, played by British actor Billy Howle, who is given a chance at redemption when he is offered a rematch against a rival he faced a decade ago. The same night he crosses paths with the feisty single mother Sunny — played by Australian actress Phoebe Tonkin — who has her own reasons for being at the boxing show. The movie will hit cinemas when it is released by Madman Entertainment on September 12.
