Shire of Exmouth plans new North West Cape camping ground to reduce illegal camping

The Shire of Exmouth is aiming to prevent illegal camping on the North West Cape by developing a camping ground next to Town Beach that will be run by a community organisation. The Exmouth Horseman’s Club secured a new 10-year lease, with a possibility of a 10-year extension, for the site where a community-managed camping ground with affordable camping options for small vehicles, tents, and cars will be situated. It is intended to reduce illegal camping and protect the North West Cape’s unique environment. The shire will work closely with the Horseman’s Club to identify any needs or challenges as the project progresses, such as a robust booking system. The development, near the town centre on Reserve 29066, is expected to start in the second half of this calendar year. Shire president Matthew Niikkula said the collaboration between the shire and the Exmouth Horseman’s Club aimed to address illegal camping and provide sustainable solutions that benefit the people. “As the club looks ahead to the future, the renewed lease and the ongoing collaboration with the Shire of Exmouth signify a commitment to sustainable and responsible land use,” he said. “Council is very excited to work together to create a welcoming and well-managed space for all to enjoy. “Exciting times lie ahead as we embark on this journey of progress and cooperation with one of our longstanding community clubs.” The council voted in a February budget review to increase the amount allocated to illegal camping prevention to $200,000.
