Almost 500 spectators, players and officials turned out for the Mid West Festival of Hockey on Saturday, including the official opening of the Iluka Hockey Stadium and Multiuser Facility. The opening was conducted by Peter Fiorenza, with an official welcome by deputy mayor Jerry Clune. Geraldton MP Lara Dalton presented a plaque to Geraldton Hockey Association president Warrick Sullivan. Geraldton locals were treated to a bumper double-header of Premier League action, with the Reds and Hale men’s and women’s sides hitting the field. In the women’s game, the experienced Hale team led by Olympians Madonna Blythe, Emily Chalker, Edwina Bone and Mickey Spano and coached by former Hockeyroo Emily Halliday defeated Reds (Aquinians) 6-0. In the men’s competition, the Reds (Aquinians) led by Australian Kookaburras captain Aaron Zalewski overcame Hale with some fast-paced plays and powerful short corner combinations to win 5-1. Top scorer Blake Govers was outstanding and showed why he is world class, having a hand in all five goals for the Reds. Geraldton pair Josh Bowen and Brayden King both put in valiant efforts for Hale. The upgraded venue now gives the Mid West community a multiuser facility capable of hosting State, national and international events in a world-class venue, enabling sporting tourism benefits for the region. Meanwhile, in the Geraldton league, Casuals defeated Murchison 3-0 in Men’s A-Grade on Tuesday night. Dan Golding scored two goals and Ted Kerr added one for Murchison. Following that game, Rovers beat Yacht Club 2-0, Kye McVee and Riley Mckoy were the goal scorers for Rovers. Australs had a 3-2 win over Saints on Friday night. In the Women’s A-Grade, Saints and Swans drew 0-0 on Friday night, and Australs won 2-0 against Murchison, thanks to goals by Eleasha Donovan and Arizona Galbraith. In the Men’s A-Reserve, Rovers and Casuals drew 0-0 on Tuesday night. Saints defeated Murchison 7-0. Chris Mcnaught scored a hat-trick and Karl Ng got a double, while Aiden Clarkson and Carter Pardoe scored one each. In the Women’s A-Reserve, Cardinals beat Vets 3-0 on Thursday night, Meg Cinnani, Annalise Fosber and Bella Tomlinson got on the scoresheet for Cardinals. Murchison got a narrow 2-1 win over Swans, A Abbott and S Clarke were the matchwinners Saints Gold beat Saints Black 4-0, Alana Miles, Kelsey Mitchell, Anita Teakle, Ros Barnes all grabbed one each. Australs drew 1-1 with Yacht Club, Kerry Jeffrey got the goal for Yacht Club while Micayla Dodd scored one for Australs.
